Newly Announced Game Lets You Become the Famed Greek Beast of Myth and Create its Labyrinth

The vast majority of fantasy or mythology-set games put you in the sandals of a mighty human or human-like deity tasked with bringing balance, destroying evil, killing monsters, or what have you. In a new upcoming game from Artificer, the roles change completely.

Instead, you step into the hooves of the dreaded Minotaur, needing to torment and obstruct a team of heroes from getting through your labyrinth. In Minos, you play the great beast of Greek myth in a unique take on the setting and with a focus on a character that, although very famous, is seldom seen in popular entertainment.

Become the Beast in Minos

Even though you play as the Minotaur, looking to foil the plans of plucky heroes, Minos does lean heavily on the lore of ancient Greek myths. It is told that the Minotaur and its maze home, the Labyrinth, were built by Daedalus and Icarus to be used by King Minos as a way of getting retribution for the death of his son. As such, Athens would be forced to send 14 young citizens into the maze every nine years, until Theseus eventually killed the beast.

In Minos, the premise is much of the same, with a team of Athenians looking to defeat you within the maze that you construct. It’s far more than simply setting up walls and turns where you can surprise-attack the invaders, though. As the Minotaur, your setup can include a myriad of traps that can all be linked into intricate sequences. You can build your perfect trap and, should they best your wiliest designs, the Minotaur’s might can be unleashed.

Available in its pre-release demo form, as PCGamer has reported, there’s also an intriguing story to Minos in which you’ll get to decide the ultimate outcome of the myth. As you progress through the waves of Athenians looking to destroy you, you’ll discover the story behind the Minotaur, why Daedalus created the Labyrinth in this form, and who’ll deserve to leave in the final conflict between Minotaur and Theseus.

An Underutilised Character from Greek Myth

Greek myths remain wildly popular sources of inspiration for modern entertainment productions, and yet, the Minotaur – one of the most iconic creations of Ancient Greek tales – seldom makes the cut.

One of the few places where the Minotaur is upheld as a great beast and the centrepiece of a whole entertainment product is at the Hippodrome online casino. Here, alongside several other hit Greek myth slots like Zeus: Gold Blitz Fortune Tower and Poseidon: Ancient Fortunes – WowPot! Megaways is the ever-popular Minotaur Rising: Ancient Fortunes – Ultra Link & Win. The slot game is all about emphasising the might of the Minotaur and unleashing its rampant power on the reels.

In other corners of modern entertainment, though, the Minotaur is rarely seen, and if it is, only for a small portion.

Strangely enough, a few adult comedy films have been among the main destinations for the Minotaur. In Role Models, Seann William Scott dons the Minotaur gear to promote an energy drink of the same name, and in Anchorman 2, a Minotaur joins the fight on the side of the History Channel. In Your Highness, while still a comedy, it does lean a bit more into the horror of the Labyrinth and how scary the Minotaur would be.

While a straightforward and enticing concept, Minos looks set to earn plenty of players by also making use of a famed but seldom-seen character from Ancient Greek mythology.
